Goods shipped from a country outside of the European Union must be cleared by customs. Therefore import fees such as Customs Duty, Excise Duty, Taxes or Advance Payment may be due on your shipment. This is valid for all goods you purchase or receive for your own personal use, including all purchases made over the internet, or goods you buy when abroad and then send to your home address.
When you purchase goods online, you should always check the terms and conditions of the retailer to help you understand what is included and what additional costs may be added to the purchase price paid to the internet retailer. If you are unsure of what costs are included, you should always contact the internet retailer prior to your purchase. Many online shops use a delivery term where your price includes transportation, but where you as a receiver are obliged to pay all costs that occur in the destination country for import and/or delivery of your goods.
Your retailer has chosen a delivery term where you as receiver should pay all import charges like Duty, Taxes and Advance Payment. On the Swedish Customs webpage www.tullverket.se you can find examples and more information on Duty and Tax calculation for your goods.
If you have received a text message or an e-mail from DHL Express, you can easily pay your Duties and Taxes online.

The rules for calculating import charges are set by the Swedish Customs Authority (Tullverket), and these charges must be paid for your goods.
The amount you are required to pay depends, among other things, on the type of goods, their value, transport costs, and any applicable insurance. More information about customs duties, VAT and what to consider when shopping online can be found on the Swedish Customs website: www.tullverket.se.

Customs duty
Customs duty varies depending on the type of goods and is usually between 0% and 20%. It is calculated based on the purchase price of the goods including transport costs and, where applicable, insurance.
For shipments with a value of up to EUR 150, a temporary simplified customs duty applies. This amounts to a fixed duty of EUR 3 per product (commodity line) in the shipment.

VAT
VAT must always be paid and is usually 25%, although lower rates apply to certain goods, for example 6% for books.
VAT is calculated on the total value of the goods including transport costs, customs duty, and other charges.

A gift is defined as something sent directly by one private individual to another and such goods do not attract import tax if the value is below 600 SEK.
You can also import without Duties and Taxes if the total amount of the shipment is above 600 SEK but it contains several gifts to different members of a family. The single value of one gift may not exceed 600 SEK and the customs invoice must clearly state that this is a gift and to several receivers.

Even if you have paid the transportation, the import charges are not included. As the transporter of your shipment DHL Express handles customs clearance and declaration of your goods, using our credit/account at the Customs Authorities. This enables faster clearance of the goods through Customs and therefore a faster delivery.
For this service we charge an additional handling fee per shipment, called Duty Tax Receiver. If your total import fees are from 50-299 SEK, the fee is 87,50 SEK including taxes. If your total import fees are between 300-8 250 SEK the fee is 206,25 SEK including taxes. For amounts over 8 250 SEK our fee is 2% of the amount + taxes.

DHL pays the customs authority on your behalf for any duties and taxes that are due on the goods. And you have to pay for the Duties and Taxes. If you want to return the items you have ordered, you have to return them within 3 months from the date the customs authority received the declaration. Send the request for reimbursement to omprovning@tullverket.se, attach the credit note from the retailer you ordered the goods from and a proof that the items have been returned, for example an export custom id. The custom authority can refund Duties and Taxes to you. Read more on www.tullverket.se.

As of 1 July 2026, the European Union (EU27) removed the customs duty exemption for low-value imports not exceeding €150. As a result, customs duties may now apply to shipments that were previously exempt. In addition, a new flat customs duty for business-to-consumer (B2C) shipments has been introduced.
Any applicable customs duties and taxes are determined and imposed by the relevant customs authorities in accordance with EU legislation and are not DHL Express fees. Where DHL Express advances duties and taxes on behalf of the receiver to avoid customs clearance delays, a disbursement fee may also be charged in line with current DHL Express surcharge conditions.
